Exploring Architectural Inspiration: Sutemi Horiguchi and the Amsterdamse School

Japanese architect Sutemi Horiguchi is on exhibition in Museum Het Schip in Amsterdam from 15 September.
By Anne Maamke Boonstra

If you're interested in architectural history, the exhibition 1923: Horiguchi meets the Amsterdamse School is for you. The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between Museum Het Schip and The Japan and Netherlands Architecture Cultural Association, supported by the International Heritage Cooperation Matching Fund. At the heart of this exhibition is the work of the Japanese architect Sutemi Horiguchi (1895), whose journey to Amsterdam has unexpectedly influenced architecture on the other side of the world.

Trip of a Lifetime

While Japan was somewhat isolated from European architectural developments a century ago, Sutemi Horiguchi was curious about the modern architectural movements taking shape in Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, a recently graduated Horiguchi decided to travel to Europe. While staying in the Netherlands he visited the newly constructed social housing complex in Amsterdam's Spaarndammerbuurt called Het Schip (the ship). His encounter with this unique architectural style ignited his passion for the movement, and he returned to Japan with a deep appreciation for the Amsterdamse School's ethos.

Inspired at Home

Horiguchi's enthusiasm for the Amsterdamse School found expression in a book he published upon his return in 1924. In it, he praised the Dutch architecture: "Here, all workers live in magnificent buildings like palaces or museums. Hail to the municipal government!" Over the years, Horiguchi's appreciation for the Amsterdamse School continued to influence his architectural work in Japan, where traces of inspiration can still be seen today.

The Exhibition at Het Schip

The exhibition celebrates the 100-year anniversary of Horiguchi's visit and showcases his impact on both Dutch and Japanese architecture. It offers a unique opportunity to witness the fusion of cultural and architectural influences, allowing visitors to delve into the cross-cultural dialogue between Japan and the Netherlands in brick and mortar. Explore the legacy of Sutemi Horiguchi and the Amsterdamse School at Museum Het Schip from 15 September to 24 October, and experience the architectural journey that connects two nations.
