The Bronbeek Museum origionated in 1863, when King Willem III of the Netherlands established a Royal Home for former soldiers of the KNIL - The Royal Dutch Indo-European Army. This home was situated in one of the royal estates. Currently, over 40 veterans are still living in the home. The estate also houses a large collection of memorabilia related to the veterans. The museum is one of the oldest in the Netherlands. An important focus of the museum is on the Dutch East Indies, their militairy relations with the Netherlands. Due to the many veterans that left the Dutch East Indies and eventually migrated to Australia, the Netherlands and Australia, creating a new link in the historic and heritage relations between the two countries.
