long description

Heritage education is an approach to teaching and learning about history and culture, which uses information available from the tangible and intangible sources as primary instructional materials. Heritage education concentrates on the student’s own historic environment. They learn about history of the environment that they live in; as a result they get to understand, value and enjoy heritage in their vicinity.

Indonesia Heritage Trust (BPPI) and Vocational Education Development Centre for Arts and Crafts (PPPG) cooperated to develop heritage education in Indonesia. Both organisations are co-operating to conduct a pilot project to see how heritage education can be combined with art subjects in schools, from playgroup to high school levels. The experiences and information gained from this pilot project can be used as a basis for the Heritage Education Exchange Program.
The possibilities are explored for co-operation between the Netherlands and Indonesia in the field of heritage education, especially in enriching materials of heritage education that have been developed in the Netherlands to be interpreted to suit Indonesian needs and situations. Second, to exchange experiences between practitioners in the Netherlands and Indonesia so that both parties can learn from each other. The Dutch partner is Erfgoed Nederland (Heritage Netherlands). Goals are to strengthen the students understanding of concepts and principles about history and culture and to stimulate their appreciation for the artistic achievements, technological genius and social and economic contributions of men and women from diverse groups. The ultimate goal at the end of the pilot project is to develop heritage education materials and methods for all schools in Indonesia from playgroup to high school. The pilot project started on November 2006 in Yogyakarta (Central Java) on 19 schools.
