Indonesian and Dutch designers team up for a Sustainable Society

During Dutch Design Week 2018 five young Indonesian designers will meet their Dutch teammates for the first time.
    23 October 2018

Five young and inspiring Indonesian designers have recently been selected to participate in ‘What if Lab: the sustainable society’. The lab is based upon a method of co-creation in which each designer from Indonesia has been teamed up with a designer from the Netherlands who is working in the same field. This collaborative method promotes the exchange of knowledge, craftsmanship, and experience, while providing the opportunity for the designers to work together to develop a shared idea.

The design teams have been partnered for their varied expertise, and are sure to bring about some interesting results. Ronaldiaz Hartantyo (Mycotech) and Iwan Pol (Olasol) will research the possibilities of working with the sustainable bio material Mycelium. Nidiya Kusmaya (Nidiya Kusmaya textile studio) and Karin Vlug work with fashion and circular textile production methods. Darina Maulana and Mitchell Jacobs (Studio Tast) will concentrate on bringing eco-pedagogy to the classroom (teaching methods on the environment). Kamil Muhammad (PPPOOOLLL) (and Joes + Manon will look into developing tools to design with communities. Adisaputra Kianjaya and Lou van Reemst will explore the material waste that gets left over after an earthquake.

This first programme get-together during Dutch Design Week will then be followed by the Dutch designers travelling to Jakarta for a residency in January 2019. The resulting prototypes and concepts of each design team will be shown during the spring in Jakarta.

The programme is organized by the Dutch Design Foundation and supported by DutchCulture, the Embassy of the Netherlands the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta and Bekraf (Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy).

DutchCulture brengt makers in beeld die internationaal gaan. Deze keer: Atelier NL. Uitgeroepen tot ambassadeurs van Dutch Design Week 2017.
    19 October 2017

    Cool Japan Matching Award

Dutch Embassy Tokyo won a Cool Japan Matching Award for stimulating creative collaborations between Saga and the Netherlands.
    28 February 2017

The Dutch Embassy started the collaboration with Saga Prefecture (province on Kyushu, the second largest island of Japan), famous for its Arita porcelain which was exported by the Dutch to Europe in the 17th century, in 2013. The goal was to give Dutch designers a chance to work together with local artisans. This collaboration, initiated on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the Arita porcelain, was one of the highlight projects of the Holland-Kyushu programme, a joint effort by the Dutch Embassy and DutchCulture to promote cultural exchange between the Netherlands and Kyushu. DutchCulture was involved in the coordination on the Dutch side, identifying interested counterparts in the cultural and creative  sectors in the Netherlands.

The Cool Japan Matching Award was established by the Japanese government to increase new collaborations between several parties such as local governments, industries and universities to promote Japan abroad.

The agreement of 2013 was updated last year when Saga governor Yoshinori Yamaguchi and Dutch ambassador Aart Jacobi signed a new agreement to broaden the scope of the collaboration beyond the creative industries: people-to-people encounters, arts & culture and architecture projects are also included. Also in the fields of sports and culture new bonds are forged and in the run-up to Tokyo 2020 a programme of grass roots exchange between Saga and the Netherlands is planned.
