Viewing tip: 100 years De Stijl

In 2017 the Netherlands celebrate the 100th anniversary of art movement De Stijl.

The Dutch art movement De Stijl, founded by artists like Piet Mondriaan and Gerrit Rietveld, has had an influence far beyond our national borders for 100 years now. In 2017, centennial events and exhibitions throughout the Netherlands are celebrating De Stijl and its influence on Dutch Design.

De Stijl started in Leiden in 1917 when De Stijl magazine was established by Theo van Doesburg. De Stijl artists search for a completely ‘new art’ that is also expected to renew all of society. Piet Mondrian is a role model for all De Stijl artists. Even today, the principles of De Stijl continue to inspire many Dutch designers like Hella Jongerius, Maarten Baas, Joris Laarman, and Piet Hein Eek.

Throughout the country you can visit exhibitions, events, presentations and book tours to experience De Stijl. You will find an overview of activities on holland.com
