Indonesia: Museum management training

In January, a group of Dutch museum and heritage professionals travelled to Indonesia to discuss collaboration on museum management training.

New training programme
The programme that has been formulated for the next three years consists of six trainings on different aspects of museum management, including collection and exhibition management, preventive conservation, disaster management, education and marketing. The 30 participants in the programme will come from museums as well as universities. They will practice at the museums and pass on their knowledge to colleagues and students. This programme will be a collaboration between the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud), the Dutch embassy in Jakarta, the Reinwardt Academy, Heritage Hands-On and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE).

Exploratory visit
In January, representatives of Heritage Hands-On (Hasti Tarekat), the Reinwardt Academy (Ruben Smit) and RCE (Hanna Pennock) travelled to Indonesia to discuss collaboration on museum management training. During museum visits and meetings in Semarang, Bandung, and at Kemendikbud in Jakarta, the participating institutes made an inventory of what they see as most needed. A workshop with museum professionals and university scholars helped in formulating the programme.

Local parties’ needs
Several parties in Indonesia had earlier expressed a desire for closer cooperation in the field of museum collections. The City of Bandung, for instance, is in the process of setting up a museum of local history. The local government in Semarang also expressed a wish to collaborate, and contacted the Dutch embassy in Jakarta. These requests coincide with a revitalisation programme for museums that Kemendikbud launched in 2010.
